This is homework?

This weekend, Caden's homework was to create a distillation unit. Oh yes, it really was! We distilled cranberry juice!

We put juice in the bottom of the pot and set it to boil. Inside, we balanced a small ceramic bowl on a mug. We put on the lid (upside down) and filled it with ice.

The juice boiled and the water inside evaporated and steamed up to our cold lid where it condensed and then rolled down into the bowl. You can see, the bowl had pure water in it and the stuff that remained in the pot was very concentrated (it contained both alot more sugar and more colour than the original juice).

Caden thought the concentrate was TOO sweet!

Needless to say he was THRILLED with this homework!
His teacher keeps me on my toes! I have had to learn to use Twitter to get her fun messages (last week she sent pictures of a secret scroll the kids would get to open the next day) and the kids are always doing some neat themed work like pirates or Harry Potter. Needless to say, Caden is wildly engaged and loving school.

If only the program had been available for Tom when he was in grade 1 or 2. What a different experience school would have been for him.
