The boys had their birthday party on Tuesday (party pics to come) but the biggest challenge of planning a party for 26 kids aged 18 months - 11 years was the food! We had kids coming with allergies to:
gluten
dairy
eggs
peanuts
beef
soy
strawberries
and 4 vegetarian kids to boot.
To a party at suppertime.
I thought, and I thought, and I thought some more about dinner options and could not come up with a single one that was safe for everyone. And so, I didn't serve dinner! I served "after school snacks" that were safe for everyone.
And the cake. HOW do you make an essentially "everything-free" cake. As it turns out, it IS possible (if we'd had a corn allergy I might have had to throw my hands up in disgust). The icing was VERY hard to work with, but in the end, we had 4 dozen cupcakes. They were gobbled up and declared edible even by the adults.
Now, when you are throwing a birthday party for a 3 year old AND a 6 year old at the same time, it is hard to get them to agree on paper goods and a cake theme, and so, we had Diego cupcakes and plates for Duncan's friends...
...and a (very lame but much loved) light saber cupcakecake (if you read the Cake Wrecks blog you are cringing now, and if you don't you should, read it that is!) and Star Wars paper goods for Caden's friends.
And for my next act? An edible and iceable gluten-free peanut-free Wall-E cake for their family party. Stay tuned!
